NY Sports Betting Slows In February Despite Super Bowl
Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

Here are three takeaways from February’s official mobile New York sports betting figures, released late Monday afternoon by the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC):

Back To Reality, But Let's Wait And See

After posting a huge handle in January, the state is back to pre-football levels. In February, the Empire State handled more than $1.467 billion in retail and mobile bets, an 18% decrease from last month's state and national record of more than $1.788 billion.

The February handle is the lowest since last September (more than $1.256 billion). It also was down 4% year over year from February 2022 (more than $1.527 billion).

Total Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) generated more than $108.28 million, a sharp 27.5% decrease of more than $41.14 million from January's record-breaking $149.43 million but up a nice 31.4% from February 2022 (more than $82.39 million). Tax collection in February was $53,058,151, a $23.14 million drop from January's $76.2 million.

Operators Down With Shortened Month

Eight of New York's nine mobile providers experienced decreases in mobile handle during the shortest month of the year.

BallyBet NY was the exception. Bally recorded more than $1.2 million, its largest since October 2022 ($1.47 million) and the fourth time it has gone above $1 million since launch.

The American Gaming Association released research on Monday showing that 68 million American adults (26%) plan to wager more than $15 billion on the NCAA  Tournament this year.

The AGA also found that 31 million American adults plan to place a traditional sports wager online, at a retail sportsbook, or with a bookie. Also, 21.5 million plan to bet casually with friends and 56.3 million plan to participate in a bracket contest.
